FAQs Let me answer some of the most frequently asked questions about our services. Q: What is "Aircraft By Owner"? A: It's an alternative to the traditional brokerage service that consists of an appraisal, log book imaging, photo gallery, detailed specs, ads, web site presentation and full consultation services by our broker. For full details and prices go to the sales service link above. Q: Who is behind "Aircraft By Owner"? A: ABO is a new service from Owens Aviation, Inc. An aircraft dealer/broker in Denton Texas. Q: Who is this service for? A: An owner that wants to handle the sale of their aircraft but doesn't have the knowledge to properly and safely market it themselves. Owners that are not located near a qualified broker or just don't want to pay the commission. Q: Who handles the ads? A: We do. We place and pay for print and online ads that contain hyperlinks that go directly to your aircrafts web presentation by N number. Q: Who am I calling when I respond to an ad? A: The owner or their representative. We do not take calls about the aircraft listed here. Q: Is the aircraft I'm seeing still for sale? A: We remove all aircraft as soon as they are sold. Q: What is the price and is it firm? A: All the aircraft are listed with a price and you are welcome to ask the owner if it's firm. We recommend a realistic firm price. So most are. But the owners are free to list any price they want. Q: Where does all the aircraft info come from? A: The owners take the photos and send them along with the logs to us. We then review the photos and logs to complete our appraisal and spec sheet. This assures us that the info is as accurate as it can be. We then image all the logs for our web site and create a CD/ROM for the new owner. Q: Can I add log book pages to the CD? A: Yes. The CD in writeable. If you have a CD burner you can add new pages. Q: Why do you make the CD? A: The CD is a backup to the logs. The images are high quality and color. If you lost the logs you could print the CD to recreate your log books. This feature can save thousands of dollars in lost aircraft value if you lost the original logs. We also keep a copy in our files as a backup if you ever need it. Q: What kind of appraisal do you do? A: First we use the "Aircraft Blue Book". Then we complete an extensive market analysis to determine a real world price. Q: Are all the listed prices based on this value? A: Most are but the owner is free to ask whatever they want for the aircraft. We give them our suggested value and they do as they wish. Q: Do you give out your appraisal info to the buyer? A: No. That is the property of the owner. It's up to them to decide if they want to disclose this info. Q: How do the photos get done? A: We have a tutorial in the Owner Resources section on how to shoot the photos. Its not that difficult. Q: What kind of camera should be used? A: Any digital camera will work fine. If you don't have one you can most likely borrow one for the shoot. Q: Does a representative from "Aircraft By Owner" get to see the aircraft in person? A: Usually not. If the aircraft is in the Dallas area we will most likely see it. We are happy to look at the aircraft if they want to come by but it's not necessary. Q: Where are the aircraft located? A: All over the country. The owners keep the aircraft in their possession. Q: What do I need to know to handle the sale myself? A: Not much. We are just a phone call away and will walk you though the entire process and supply you with all the required docs to close. Q: What will I be required to do? A: You will need to take the photos and send them to us along with your logs for imaging, handle the incoming calls and demo the aircraft. We will walk you through every step and are just a phone call away if you have any questions. This is were the savings come in. By you doing this part of the job you will save a substantial sum of money. Q: How do I know what shape the aircraft is in? A: We recommend a prebuy inspection by a impartial shop. This is the buyers expense. Q: Are the aircraft sold with a warranty of any kind? A: All aircraft owners are advised to sell their aircraft "as is" but they are free to do as they please. Most will not offer any warranty. Q: What kind of documents do you use? A: All sales are completed with a written sales contract, FAA bill of sale and registration form. All listings are by written brokerage agreement. Q: Can I list my aircraft with a broker and you at the same time? A: Yes. As far a we're concerned its fine as long as you use your own contact info. But if you are exclusively listed with a broker they they may not allow you to use your contact info without their permission so check with them first. Most brokers are not going to have a presentation as complete as ours so this is a good complement to their service if it does not conflict with them. Truthfully though, you probably don't need both. I know. I offer both and cant see why you would want to do that. If you don't want to handle any part of the sale, give it to a broker and don't use us. If you don't mind doing some of the work give it to us. The only reason to use both is if the broker just does not do a good presentation. And many don't, so it could come up. We would be more than happy to broker it for you as long as you bring it to us in Denton. We don't handle brokered aircraft unless we have them at our location. Q: What is in the Owner Resources section? A: The owner has access to a "Sellers Guide" to aid in the sale, links to aviation venders and all the documents needed to complete the sale. This is a secure section. Q: What does it take to get qualified for financing? A: The financing requires you to have good credit, at least two years of job history and about a 40% debt to income ratio. Q: Do you finance aircraft that are not in your system? A: Yes. We will look at any aircraft you find and consider it for financing. Q: Do you offer aircraft insurance? A: We work with a very good aircraft insurance agency and can put you in contact with them. Go to the insurance link above. Q: Who does your web site and photos? A: We run our own web site and do all of the photos and logs in house. We have had many compliments on the web site from some very nice people and we thank you for those comments! We are trying to add more content like the logs online as well as other improvements soon! Q: How long have you been in business? A: Owens Aviation, Inc. was established in 1984 on Addison Airport by Scott Owens. In 1976 at the age of 16 Scott started work in the aircraft sales business with Carl Johnson in Rockwall Texas. Then in 1980 he worked as a salesman for Ted Sherman on Addison Airport till starting OAI in 1984. We moved to Denton Texas in 2007. The Aircraft By Owner service was started in 2003. Q: Can you supply me with any referrals? A: We have a very strong repeat clientele that would be more than happy to talk to you. We have sold one aircraft seven times and have handled twelve sales for one client. We are very well known by most of the maintenance shops, flight schools, insurance agencies FBOs, radio shops, aviation lenders, aircraft title companies, pilots, aircraft owners in North Texas. We have clients from all over the country. From first time buyers to experienced owners. We have sold aircraft for companies like Rockwell International, Collins Radio, Benchmark Bank, Gateway National Bank and GreenTree Financial.
